cable avoidance & signal generator
This comprehensive training course is designed for professionals working in construction, excavation, groundworks, and utility sectors, where safe and accurate detection of underground services is essential.
Participants will receive a mix of theoretical instruction and practical hands-on training in the use of Cable Avoidance Tools (CAT) and Signal Generators (Genny). The course focuses on:
-
Accurate location of buried utilities
-
Minimising risk of service strikes
-
Improving site safety and operational efficiency
Topics covered include the principles of electromagnetic detection, equipment setup and calibration, operational techniques, and interpreting signal responses.
By the end of the course, delegates will have the knowledge, skills, and confidence to use CAT & Genny equipment safely, effectively, and in line with industry best practices.
Target Audiance
This course is ideal for professionals involved in construction, excavation, utility management, and public works, where identifying underground services is critical to safe and efficient operations.
Suitable participants include:
-
Site supervisors and project managers
-
Utility locators and groundworkers
-
Construction and civil engineering personnel
-
Health and safety officers
-
Maintenance teams and local authority staff
-
Infrastructure and highways operatives
It is also valuable for government employees and contractors working on infrastructure or refurbishment projects who need to improve safety, reduce service strike risk, and comply with industry standards for underground utility detection.
Course Type
The CAT & Genny Training course is delivered through a combination of classroom-based theory and hands-on practical training.
-
The theory session covers key concepts such as how the equipment works, interpreting signals, and understanding safety protocols and legislation.
-
The practical element allows delegates to use the CAT and Genny equipment in real-world scenarios, developing confidence and competence under the guidance of an experienced instructor.
This blended approach ensures participants gain both the knowledge and practical skills required to safely and accurately detect underground utilities on site.
Benefit Of The Course
In addition to core training on the safe and effective use of Cable Avoidance Tools (CAT) and Signal Generators (Genny), this course offers a range of added benefits:
-
Access to exclusive resources, including detailed instructional materials and technical support
-
Opportunities to network with industry professionals, fostering collaboration and career development
-
Ongoing updates on changes in best practices, industry standards, and advancements in detection technology
-
Improved confidence in using CAT & Genny equipment, leading to greater job performance and enhanced on-site safety
These benefits make the course a valuable investment for professionals seeking to sharpen their skills, stay current with industry trends, and reduce the risk of costly underground service strikes.
Duration
This course is a half day course
Format
The CAT & Genny Training course is delivered by one of our highly experienced instructors, each with a strong background in utility detection, site safety, and practical equipment use.
Our trainers ensure that participants receive clear, practical guidance and have the opportunity to ask questions, engage in discussion, and gain real-world insights that go beyond the basics of equipment operation.
Assessment
To ensure full understanding of both the theoretical and practical aspects of the course, delegates will complete two forms of assessment:
-
A theory test to confirm their knowledge of relevant legislation, safety protocols, and core principles of underground utility detection
-
A practical assessment, where delegates will demonstrate correct use of CAT and Genny equipment, applying different detection techniques in a controlled environment
Successful completion of both elements confirms the delegate’s competence and confidence in safely using cable avoidance tools on site.
Facilities used
For the practical elements of the course, we will supply the CAT and Genny equipment, ensuring all delegates have the opportunity to practise using the tools under expert supervision.
This allows participants to become familiar with industry-standard devices and gain hands-on experience without needing to bring their own equipment.
Materials Provided
All handouts, slide presentations, and supporting literature relevant to the CAT & Genny Training course will be supplied by us.
These materials are designed to reinforce the training, provide valuable reference information, and support delegates in applying their knowledge confidently in the workplace.
Entry Requirements
There are no formal prerequisites for attending the CAT & Genny Training course, making it accessible to a wide range of participants. However, the following is recommended:
-
A basic understanding of construction, groundworks, or utility operations
-
Familiarity with general site safety protocols
-
A willingness to participate in hands-on, practical training
In some cases, participants may be asked to complete a registration form and provide proof of employment or involvement in a relevant field.
This ensures the course is tailored to those who will benefit most from its practical applications and safety-focused outcomes.
Equipment Needed
As the course includes a practical, hands-on element, all participants are required to bring and wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) suitable for a construction environment.
This includes:
-
High-visibility vest or jacket
-
Safety boots
-
Hard hat
-
Protective gloves (if required by your site or company policy)
-
Weather-appropriate outdoor clothing, as some practical exercises may take place outside
Delegates who arrive without the required PPE may not be able to participate in the practical component of the training.
Certification Awarded
Upon successful completion of the CAT & Genny Training course, delegates will be awarded a UK Industries Training In-House Certificate of Competence.
This certificate confirms that the participant has:
-
Completed both the theoretical and practical components of the course
-
Demonstrated a solid understanding of underground utility detection using CAT and Genny equipment
-
Shown the ability to apply safe working practices in line with industry expectations
This in-house certificate serves as valuable evidence of training and competence for both employers and regulatory compliance purposes.
Certification Validity
The UK Industries Training In-House Certificate of Competence awarded for this course is valid for 5 years.
After this period, it is strongly recommended that delegates complete a refresher course to stay up to date with:
-
Current industry best practices
-
Advancements in detection equipment
-
Updated safety regulations and procedures
Maintaining valid certification helps ensure ongoing workplace safety, legal compliance, and operator confidence.
