The IPAF training course is ideal for a wide range of individuals who operate or oversee the use of powered access equipment. This includes construction workers, maintenance teams, facilities managers, and health and safety officers. It is also highly beneficial for anyone responsible for using aerial platforms—such as scissor lifts or cherry pickers—who wishes to improve their skills, ensure safe operation, and remain compliant with current safety regulations.

The IPAF training course offers several important benefits, including improved safety awareness when operating powered access equipment, a deeper understanding of relevant regulations and operational procedures, and greater confidence in handling different types of MEWPs (Mobile Elevated Work Platforms). Upon successful completion, participants receive an industry-recognised certification that proves their competency to employers—helping to create safer job sites and significantly reduce the risk of accidents.

The IPAF training course combines both theoretical and practical learning to ensure comprehensive understanding and safe operation. Delegates begin with classroom-based instruction, covering key topics such as safety regulations, equipment operation, and risk assessment. This is followed by practical, hands-on training where participants operate powered access equipment under expert supervision—applying what they’ve learned in real-world scenarios.

For added flexibility, we also offer an E-Learning option. This allows delegates to complete the theory modules online at their own pace before attending our training centre for the practical assessment. The full IPAF training course takes approximately one day (around 7 hours) to complete. The day is structured with a theory session in the morning, followed by practical training and assessments in the afternoon.

If you choose the E-Learning option and complete the theory module online in advance, you will only need to attend a half-day practical session—either in the morning or afternoon—at our training centre.

The IPAF training course is delivered through a combination of classroom-based theory and practical, hands-on instruction. While some theory components can be completed online via our E-Learning option, the practical training must be completed in person to ensure delegates can safely operate powered access equipment under professional supervision.

All practical sessions take place indoors, so there’s no need to worry about weather conditions affecting your training.

The IPAF training course is assessed through both theoretical and practical evaluations. Delegates must first pass a written test covering key topics such as safety regulations, equipment operation, and risk assessment. This is followed by a practical assessment, where participants demonstrate their ability to operate powered access equipment safely and competently.

Successful completion of both assessments results in an IPAF Certificate and PAL Card, recognised across the industry as proof of training and competence.

To successfully deliver the IPAF training course, several key facilities and resources are required:

• A classroom equipped with audiovisual tools for delivering the theoretical components.

• A safe, designated area for practical training, suitable for operating powered access equipment.

• Access to a range of powered access platforms, such as scissor lifts and cherry pickers, to provide hands-on experience.

• Personal protective equipment (PPE) and appropriate safety gear for all participants, ensuring a safe and compliant training environment.

These facilities help ensure the course is delivered effectively, with both knowledge and practical skills being thoroughly covered.

As the training provider, we supply a comprehensive range of materials to support delegates throughout the IPAF course. These typically include:

• Participant handbooks covering theoretical content, safety regulations, and operational procedures

• Visual aids such as presentations and instructional videos to enhance understanding

• Practical training guides and equipment inspection checklists to assist during the hands-on training sessions

These resources are designed to support learning, reinforce key concepts, and help delegates prepare for both the written and practical assessments.

To attend the IPAF training course, participants are generally expected to meet the following criteria:

• Be at least 18 years old (younger individuals may be accepted with guardian permission—please contact us to discuss)

• Have a basic understanding of health and safety principles

• Possess a suitable level of physical fitness to safely operate powered access equipment

While previous experience in the construction or maintenance industries is recommended, prior knowledge of powered access equipment is not essential, as full training will be provided.

The IPAF training course is delivered in English, and all exam papers, instructional materials, and manuals are provided in English. Therefore, delegates will need a good level of English reading and writing ability to successfully complete the course.

To complete the practical element of the IPAF training course, delegates will train on a variety of powered access equipment—typically including scissor lifts and cherry pickers (boom lifts)—to cover different working-at-height scenarios.

Delegates are also required to bring the following personal protective equipment (PPE) with them on the day:

Safety harness with a restraint lanyard suitable for use in a MEWP (Mobile Elevated Work Platform). The harness must be in-date with a valid inspection certificate, which must be shown before use.

Safety footwear

Hi-visibility waistcoat or jacket

Safety goggles or glasses

Protective gloves

Failure to bring the required PPE may prevent participation in the practical session. Please ensure all equipment is compliant and fit for use.

Upon successful completion of the IPAF training course, participants are issued an IPAF Operator ePAL Card (Electronic Powered Access Licence), which serves as official certification for operating powered access equipment. The card is valid for five years and clearly indicates the specific categories of machinery the holder is qualified to operate.

In addition to the ePAL card, delegates may also receive a certificate of training summarising the skills and knowledge gained during the course—providing further evidence of their competency for employers and site managers.

The IPAF Operator Card is valid for five years from the date of issue. To maintain certification, operators are required to complete refresher training before the card expires. This ensures continued compliance with the latest safety practices, operational standards, and industry regulations.

Even if your card is still valid, it is strongly recommended to retake the course if you haven’t operated a MEWP (Mobile Elevating Work Platform) for an extended period. Refresher training helps keep your knowledge current, reinforces safe working habits, and boosts your confidence when returning to powered access equipment.
