IPAF PAL+ COURSE

The IPAF PAL+ Course is an advanced training programme designed for individuals who already hold a valid IPAF PAL Card and wish to further enhance their skills and knowledge in operating powered access equipment.

This course covers advanced topics such as:

  • Detailed risk assessment

  • Enhanced machine control and safety practices

  • Effective communication at height

PAL+ is particularly suited for operators working in challenging environments—including steelwork structures, confined overhead spaces, or uneven and difficult terrain. The course promotes best practice and prepares operators to handle complex, high-risk situations with confidence and competence.

Target Audience

The IPAF PAL+ Course is aimed at experienced MEWP operators who already hold a valid IPAF PAL Card and wish to further develop their skills in operating powered access equipment in more complex or high-risk environments.

Typical delegates include:

  • Skilled MEWP operators seeking advanced certification

  • Supervisors and managers involved in overseeing access operations

  • Health & Safety personnel responsible for managing or auditing work at height activities

This course is ideal for those working in environments that demand a higher level of competence, such as construction sites with steel frameworks, tight overhead clearance, or rough terrain.

Benefit Of The Course

Participants gain a deeper understanding of advanced safety protocols, contributing to a safer and more compliant work environment. The course also encourages clearer communication and stronger teamwork between operators and supervisors, enhancing overall operational efficiency.

In addition, successful completion of the PAL+ course builds greater confidence and competence when working in complex or high-risk situations at height, such as on steelwork, in confined spaces, or on challenging terrain.

Course Type

The IPAF PAL+ Course combines both theoretical and practical elements, with a strong emphasis on practical assessment. Since the core theoretical content is covered in the standard IPAF course, PAL+ focuses primarily on applying that knowledge in challenging, real-world scenarios—making it a more practical, hands-on experience for experienced operators.

The IPAF PAL+ Course covers a range of advanced topics designed to prepare experienced operators for more demanding work environments. Key areas include:

  • Advanced risk assessment techniques

  • Effective communication methods for working at height

  • Machine safety and operational procedures

  • Best practices for managing and operating powered access equipment

Participants also take part in practical training scenarios that strengthen hands-on skills and enhance decision-making abilities in complex or high-risk situations.

Duration

This course is a 1 day course

Format

The IPAF PAL+ Course includes a concise theory session, followed by an intensive focus on practical training. Delegates will operate larger machines, including:

  • A scissor lift with a minimum 10m working height

  • A boom lift with a minimum 15m working height

Practical exercises are designed to simulate challenging real-world scenarios, such as:

  • Operating in confined overhead spaces

  • Driving and manoeuvring on difficult or uneven terrain

This hands-on approach ensures that participants are well-prepared to handle high-risk environments with confidence and competence.

Assessment

To successfully complete the IPAF PAL+ Course, candidates must pass:

  • A theory test

  • A practical assessment

  • An individual interview

These assessments ensure that participants have the knowledge, skills, and judgement required to operate safely and effectively in complex or high-risk environments.

Facilities used

The IPAF PAL+ Course is delivered at our dedicated training centres, equipped with a range of powered access machines including scissor lifts, boom lifts, and specialist framework designed to replicate real-world site conditions.

These facilities provide a controlled, safe environment where participants can practise advanced skills and face realistic scenarios, helping to prepare them for the challenges of operating MEWPs in complex or high-risk settings.

Materials Provided

Participants in the IPAF PAL+ Course receive a variety of comprehensive training materials to support their learning, including:

  • Course manuals covering key topics and advanced operational practices

  • Safety guidelines and industry best practices

  • Instructional videos to reinforce theoretical knowledge

  • Access to practical exercises and assessments

  • Handouts and reference materials for ongoing use and review

These resources are designed to enhance both classroom learning and practical performance in real-world scenarios.

Entry Requirements

To attend the IPAF training course, participants are typically expected to meet the following requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years old (we may train younger candidates with guardian permission – please contact us for details)

  • Have a basic understanding of health and safety principles

  • Possess a suitable level of physical fitness to operate powered access equipment

  • Have a good level of English reading and writing, as all course materials, manuals, and assessments are in English

While prior experience with powered access equipment is not essential, it is recommended that candidates have some background in the construction or maintenance industries.

We are committed to supporting all learners. If you have specific needs such as dyslexia, please contact our sales office to discuss how we can assist and ensure a positive training experience.

Equipment Needed

To complete the practical element of the IPAF training course, participants will train on a variety of powered access equipment, typically including:

  • Scissor lifts

  • Cherry pickers (boom lifts)

These machines are used to simulate different working-at-height scenarios and ensure well-rounded, hands-on experience.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) – You must bring the following items with you:

  • A harness with a restraint lanyard suitable for use in a MEWP. This must be in test, and you will need to provide proof of inspection before use.

  • Safety footwear

  • A hi-vis waistcoat or coat

  • Safety goggles or glasses

  • Protective gloves

  • Warm clothing, as the practical training may take place outdoors

Failure to bring the required PPE may prevent participation in the practical session.

    Certification Awarded

Upon successful completion of the IPAF training course, participants receive an IPAF Operator ePAL Card (Electronic Powered Access Licence), which serves as official certification for operating powered access equipment.

The card is valid for five years and clearly indicates the specific categories of MEWPs (Mobile Elevating Work Platforms) the holder is qualified to operate.

In addition to the ePAL Card, participants may also receive a certificate of training summarising the knowledge and skills gained during the course—providing further evidence of their competency to employers and site managers.

    Certification Validity

If you hold a valid IPAF PAL Card and successfully complete the PAL+ course, you will be issued a new PAL Card displaying the enhanced PAL+ status for the relevant categories.

For example, if your current PAL Card includes categories 1a, 1b, 3a, and 3b, and you successfully complete PAL+ in 3a and 3b, your updated card will show:
    1a, 1b, 3a+ and 3b+

This clearly indicates that you have been assessed to a higher level of competence in those specific categories.
