It is ideal for anyone who has previously completed the 5-day SMSTS course and is due for a refresher. It must be completed before the expiry of the original certificate.

The course runs over 2 consecutive days, making it ideal for busy professionals needing an efficient and effective refresher.

The SMSTS-R is a short, intensive classroom-based course, using a mix of interactive learning methods such as case studies, group discussions, and practical exercises. It is designed to update existing knowledge rather than reteach the full SMSTS content.

The SMSTS-R includes several key modules:

Legal responsibilities and liabilities

Risk assessment and management

Health and safety legislation updates

Site safety management techniques

Emergency procedures and first aid

Communication and leadership in site safety

Participants are assessed through:

• Engagement in group discussions

• Practical exercises

• A multiple-choice test at the end of the course

Successful completion is required to renew the SMSTS certification.

This is a classroom-based course, delivered by experienced instructors using presentations, interactive discussion, and real-world case examples.

Course materials are supplied, including:

• Workbooks and training literature

• Presentations and handouts

Delegates should bring:

• A pen and notepad

• Valid ID (e.g. passport or driving licence)

• Their current SMSTS certificate (recommended)

As a classroom course, no special practical facilities are required.

Delegates must have previously completed the full 5-day SMSTS course. It is also recommended that attendees have a supervisory or managerial role and a good understanding of site safety.

Delegates should bring:

• A pen and notepad

• Any relevant site or role documentation

• Optional learning aids like highlighters or sticky notes

All other materials will be provided.

On successful completion, delegates will receive the CITB SMSTS certificate, confirming their ability to manage health and safety on construction sites.

The SMSTS certificate is valid for five years. To remain certified, delegates must complete another refresher course before their certificate expires.
If the certificate expires, the full 5-day SMSTS course must be retaken.
